Character Traits : Humility
How many times have you heard the phrase humble yourself? For the longest time I did not know what that meant. Studying the Eight beatitudes has enriched the meaning of humility, and now I see why this was the first beatitudes Jesus shared with the disciples. Let’s go over humility shall we…….
Humility : A modest or low of one’s importance; humbleness
Synonyms : Modesty, humbleness, meekness, submissiveness
Let’s look at three different versions of Matthew 5:3 ( Humility)
Matthew 5:3 Amplified Bible
3 “Blessed [spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired] are the poor in spirit [those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant], for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].
Matthew 5:3 New Living Translation
3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,[a] for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Matthew 5:3 New Life Version
3 “Those who know there is nothing good in themselves are happy, because the holy nation of heaven is theirs.
When we are on this walk with Christ, He is the most important thing in the equation. It is His will that we are seeking, and His ways that we are submitting to. Knowing that apart from Him you can do nothing. Having the boldness to get out of yourself and let the lord know you need Him. Being honest and admitting that you are not as pure as you claim to be. Kneeling before the lord hungry and thirsty for His presence. Has God been speaking to you about humility? Here is the answer to how you can develop this beautiful attitude.
James 4:7-10 Amplified Bible
7 So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God [with a contrite heart] and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; and purify your [unfaithful] hearts, you double-minded [people]. 9 Be miserable and grieve and weep [over your sin]. Let your [foolish] laughter be turned to mourning and your [reckless] joy to gloom.10 Humble yourselves [with an attitude of repentance and insignificance] in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you [He will lift you up, He will give you purpose].
I love the Bible because it is really our guide! I thank Jesus all the time for teaching me how to do things. He breaks it down in James 4:7-10 on how to practice humility daily. I was going to break it down myself, but I would like for you guys to mediate on this word yourselves. Let this instruction be embedded in your mind, and become a natural habit in your walk. So many people think that humbling yourself is a sign of weakness, but us Christians should be proud of our weaknesses.
2 Corinthians 12:9 Amplified Bible
9 but He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you [My lovingkindness and My mercy are more than enough—always available—regardless of the situation]; for [My] power is being perfected [and is completed and shows itself most effectively] in [your] weakness.”Therefore, I will all the more gladly boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ [may completely enfold me and] may dwell in me.
Let us practice humbling ourselves in the mighty hand of God! Come meet me back here on Wednesday as we talk about the second beatitude Mourning.
